In fact, key commands are as well supported by Live Loops as they are throughout the rest of the DAW.Īlongside Live Loops, GarageBand’s XY-controlled Remix FX feature has also made it over to Logic Pro X 10.5, as a plugin offering a range of XY- and slider-controlled effects (Repeater, Filter, Wobble, Downsampler, etc) for ‘DJ-style’ performance processing. Vertical ‘scenes’ are also supported - click the arrow at the bottom of a column to trigger all cells in that column - and a single cell on each track, or a scene, can be queued for launching via a key command. Playback is quantised, so triggered cells wait for the next specified beat or bar division before taking over from the currently playing loop individual cells can be set to retrigger when clicked, or trigger only when ‘held’ with the mouse and various ‘start behaviour’ options allow for launch timing variation. The relationship is bi-directional, so you can also drag clips out of the Tracks View into the Grid. The idea is to jam around with drum loop variations on one track, bass loops on another, etc, to create an on-the-fly arrangement, optionally recording your ‘performance’ directly into the Tracks View, where it can be edited and finessed as usual. The Live Loops Grid is an alternative - but interlinked and, yes, simultaneously visible - interface to the regular Tracks View, hosting multiple tempo-synced audio or MIDI loops in ’cells’ on each track, one of which can be played back at a time. Auto drag and drop sample mapping is helpful here, as is Flex time implementation, the four LFOs and five envelopes, which all makes for a pro grade sampler that raises the bar.(Image credit: Future) Performance and verdictĪ potentially huge deal for those dance and electronic producers who have long found themselves torn between the supremely deep but resolutely linear workflow of Logic and the arguably less high-spec but inspiringly freeform tech-jazzery of Ableton Live, Live Loops brings the majority of the latter’s Session View functionality to the former. The new Sampler is easy to use no matter how complex your multisampled instruments can get. This breaks down into subcategories which ultimately means as much complexity or simplicity to a beat as is needed. The new Drum Synth works very well to generate fully synthesized percussive sounds in four types: kicks, snares and claps, percussion and hats and cymbals.

The cell layout in live sequencing makes for a really straightforward way to work that not only works on Mac machines but also on iPhone and iPad. Despite that, it does remain intuitive to use and the fact it can now be used live is a testament to that.

This is undoubtedly a professional tool meaning it's complex and intricate in its offerings.

The Quick Sampler is also a top option, allowing you to drop in single samples to turn them into playable instruments.

Sampler is a long-overdue update which gives a workstation type sample set with the likes of pianos, guitars and more on offer while remaining EXS24 library backwards compatible. Combined with the new Drum Synth, you've got lots of beat options. This gives you an FL Studio style interface for the drums with 15 rhythm and melody options that makes it perfect for building beats. The Step Sequencer is another huge feature which allows you to gray out the current Step Editor if you activate it. This can be used on individual tracks or strapped across the mix bus and gives lag-free flare-style effects following the cursor. This is designed for electronic music producers and allows for transitions, gates, stutter edits, virtual record scratching and more via a mouse or Logic Remote on iPad and iPhone. Yes, it's the same one that first appeared in GarageBand and is still lots of fun.
